DO NOT put sharps in recycling! Improperly disposing of used sharps can pose a public health risk. If not properly secured, discarded needles may expose sanitation workers to needle stick injuries and potential infection. Proper methods of sharps disposal include return/exchange, disposal in an FDA-approved container, or disposal in a sturdy, alternative container.

How to Make an Alternative Sharps Container

Use an empty household container made of heavy-duty plastic with these features:

- stays upright

- tight-fitting lid that cannot be punctured

- does not leak

When the container is 3/4 full, close the lid and tape shut. Label the container "Sharps", "Biohazard", etc.

Place the container in the household trash, ideally in the center of a full trash bag.
