Fall 2024 Household Hazardous Waste Collection, Medication and Sharps Takeback, & Document Shredding

Carroll County Maintenance Facility, 1250 Old Meadow Branch Road, Westminster, MD 

This free service for Carroll County residents is the preferred method for safe, responsible household hazardous waste management. Residential use only, no commercial, business, or farm.

Examples of Acceptable Items: 

  • Gas/Gas Oil Mix
  • Oil-Based Paints, Stains, and
    Sealants
  • Paint Thinners
  • Solvents
  • Household Cleaners
  • Pool Cleaners
  • Pesticides/Insecticides
  • Herbicides
  • Photographic Chemicals
  • CFL/Fluorescent Tubes
  • Household Use Nickel-Cadmium, NIMH, and Lithium Batteries
  • Vape Liquids in Consumer Containers

 Unacceptable Items:

  • Latex Paint, Water-Based Stains, and Sealants (solidify using an absorbent such as kitty litter, sand, mulch, shredded paper, etc., and dispose in regular trash)
  • Explosives/Ammunition
  • Asbestos
  • Medical Waste or Biohazard Waste
  • Radioactive Materials
  • Single Use Household Batteries
  • Vehicle Batteries*
  • Motor Oil/Antifreeze*
  • Propane/Compressed Gas Tanks*
  • Kerosene*

* Items with an asterisk are accepted year-round at the Northern Landfill Recycling Center, 1400 Baltimore Blvd., Westminster, 21157

Document Shredding: Document shredding will be available until the truck is full; limit 3 bags or "Banker's Boxes" (approx. 24"x15"x10") 

Medication and Sharps Takeback: Residents may dispose of medications (no liquids) and sharps (syringes, etc.), offered by the Carroll County Health Department (CCHD). Please visit the Carroll County Health Department webpage at cchd.maryland.gov for more details on items that can be disposed.
