Recreation and Parks is pleased to be the recipient of the following 2024 MRPA Awards:

Friends of Krimgold Park for the MRPA Showcase Community Organization Award

The Friends of Krimgold Park, formed in 2018, is a dedicated group of volunteers committed to the stewardship and beautification of Krimgold Park, located in the rolling hills of Carroll County. Their work has significantly improved the park and the community, such as

  • their efforts to eliminate invasive plant species
  • planning a native plant garden
  • installing housing for the Purple Martins
  • and assisting with the cleaning efforts of the 4 ponds, which keep this water feature healthy and enjoyable for all.

Education and community involvement are at the heart of the Friends of Krimgold Park's mission. They have hosted numerous free educational events, allowing the public to engage with and learn about the park’s environment and its inhabitants. These events foster a deeper connection between the community and the natural world, inspiring future generations to care for and preserve these valuable green spaces.

Through their dedication, the Friends of Krimgold Park have transformed the park into a vibrant community hub where people of all ages can gather to enjoy nature, learn about the environment, and participate in activities that promote wellness and sustainability. This achievement is a testament to the support and involvement of the community.

“Westminster Veterans Memorial Park, Memorial Garden”  - MRPA Showcase Landscape Site Award

Westminster Veterans Memorial Park, a 33-acre open public space in Carroll County, is a lasting tribute to the men and women who have served in the U.S. military.   At the heart of the park is the 1 ½ acre Veterans Memorial Garden, a beautifully designed area by Will Brozy, Park Development Manager, which includes a raised Blue Star Memorial Marker, a national symbol of recognition that honors all U.S. military members, past and present, who have served our country.

Adding to the significance of the memorial is a visual tribute, the Walk of Honor.  The Walk of Honor is a beautiful spiral pathway connecting keystone-shaped sitting spaces where all six branches of the U.S. military are represented and recognized: Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, and Space Force. Each branch is represented with custom-designed plaques along the path. Visitors are invited to reflect on the values of service, duty, and patriotism as they walk along the path.

The Westminster Veterans Memorial Park is a lasting tribute to the men and women who have served in the U.S. military. Its thoughtful design, from the Veterans Memorial Garden to the Blue Star Memorial Marker and Walk of Honor, creates a beautiful and meaningful space. The park’s landscape is a living testament to the values of sacrifice, honor, and community, offering a place of solace and remembrance for families, loved ones, friends, and brothers-in-arms for all to enjoy.
