Westminster, MD, Tuesday, December 15, 2020 – The Carroll County Board of Commissioners is seeking Carroll County citizens to immediately fill openings on Carroll County Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA).

Board of Zoning Appeals is a quasi-judicial body where members serve an important role in our community by helping to review land use and zoning requests, variances, and appeals. BZA’s primary purpose is to help assure fair and equitable application and administration of the county’s zoning ordinance. Impartiality is required and the board must abide by due process standards and avoid the appearance of impropriety.

BZA members generally have an interest in comprehensive community planning, zoning and development of land, protection of the environment and a desire to assist Carroll County with land-use policies to protect the health, safety and welfare of its residents.  Applicants must have the skills necessary to interact with the public, including patience and communication. Generally, the BZA meets during daytime hours, between two and four days a month.

Members of the BZA must be residents of Carroll County. Although no specific requirements are necessary, applicants with experience or education in planning, law, architecture, natural resource management, real estate and related fields are preferred; legal or judicial experience is particularly helpful.

Citizen participation is critical to the success of local government and Carroll County Government needs resident’s skills, enthusiasm and fresh ideas. Advantages to joining a board or commission include making a difference in your community, helping facilitate positive change, gaining new skills, making great connections and learning more about how your local government works.  Learn more at https://www.carrollcountymd.gov/government/boards-commissions/board-of-zoning-appeals/.
