Westminster, MD, Thursday, May 26, 2022 - The Carroll County Department of Public Works is notifying residents and businesses that due to the increasing costs to process solid waste at the landfill, an increase in certain tipping fees will be applied to customers, effective July 1, 2022. Residents and businesses may see price changes from their solid waste haulers due to the increase.

On May 24, 2022, the Carroll County Board of Commissioners adopted the FY23 Operating Budget for Carroll County which included an increase in certain rates at the Northern Landfill. In an effort to offset the county’s increasing costs to recycle, the charge for commercial hauled recyclables will increase from $30 to $55 per ton, starting 7/1/22. This change does not affect recyclables dropped off directly by county residents at the Northern Landfill recycling area.

Other increases include:

  • tip fee for bulk/commercial hauled tires from $150/ton to $175/ton
  • tip fee for tires off-rim from $2.50 each to $3.00 each
  • tip fee for tires on-rim from $3.50 each to $4.00 each

In Carroll County, haulers are independent private businesses contracted by residents and are not managed by the county.

The county continues to encourage recycling due to its environmental benefits and landfill space savings. The county has helpful recycling information available on a dedicated webpage.  For more information, please contact Cliff Engle, Bureau Chief Solid Waste at 410-386-2248 or cengle@carrollcountymd.gov or Maria Myers, Recycling Manager, at 410-386-2510 or mtmyers@carrollcountymd.gov.
